About Me
My name is Mel Clute, and I'm a self-taught cake designer and pastry chef currently operating in Washington DC. The baking started after I watched a bit too much Ace of Cakes as a kid, and I recently decided to turn it into a career after graduating from Cornell University in 2022 with a degree in Food Anthropology.
The title “The Hungry Earth” comes from my long-standing fascination with Mesoamerica, as the earth is often depicted in art as a simultaneously regenerative and destructive force which both gives and takes life.
